When we think of dangerous jobs, it is often with police officers, firefighters, loggers, pilots and other traditionally risky occupations in mind. But a recent survey of contractors makes it clear that some of the most dangerous jobs are held by people we see in and around McLean every day: road construction workers.

Forty-four percent of surveyed contractors in Virginia and across the nation said that they had experienced motor vehicle crashes at their road construction sites last year. Of those who reported work zone car accidents, half said the incidents involved injuries.

Thirteen percent of those who had crashes at their sites said at least one fatality occurred.

According to a recent news report, the Associated General Contractors of America surveyed more than 700 contractors in a dozen of the nation's most populous states: Virginia, California, Texas, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, North Carolina, Kentucky, Colorado, Indiana and Washington.

A spokesperson for the organization said that the crashes resulted in injuries to construction workers 25 percent of the time. In 11 percent of the crashes, a construction worker is killed.

Road construction workers and supervisors are asked to consider a number of factors each day before they go out to work sites, including the following:

  • How will weather impact the job at hand and the workers?
  • Are workers encouraged to report on-the-job near-misses?
  • In the case of a vehicle crash, are emergency procedures clear?
  • How many workers will be on the site, and how many of them are temporary workers or new?

In some situations in which a worker has been injured, it will make sense to speak with a Northern Virginia attorney experienced in both personal injury litigation and workers' compensation appeals.
